Red Bull Cincinnati Crosstown Barmaster

Mondays is usually my day to catch up on all the work I didn't do during the weekend, one of that is to summarize the last week! Last tuesday I headed down to Cincinnati for a last minute shoot with Red Bull. It was a unique barmaster where it was two college's competing against each other! Pretty cool concept and idea. Pretty cut and simple, here are some of the images from the shoot.

Tech details. These were all shot with one light off to the side. It was so dark in there that my camera had trouble focusing as you can see in the last photograph. I really dislike shooting in the dark because it's so hard to get focus at the right moment. My camera has to hunt for the focus and a lot of the times I have to focus manually. A lot of my shooting involves me sticking the camera above my head so it's really hard to get it right. Hopefully Red Bull gives me more shoots where it's not in pitch black darkness *hint hint wink wink* hah. It was still an awesome event and Amy the sbm did a good job putting it together. I also got to hang out with all my friends I have made in cincinnati because most of them all were there. CJ Townsend tore it up on the turntables for the afterparty.

This is my favorite image because he is in midpour!

I love my job

As a photographer, I'm always faced with interesting situations and uncertainty. Last weekend, I was suppose to photograph a rail jam event in columbus but for some reason, I couldn't get a hold of the event coordinator and I didn't end up going. I was going to go to work on my action sport photography. So I was quite bummed that I was not able to go, because that is what I like and am interested in.

But this morning I was contacted by one of my clients for a last minute shoot. I had bid for the job earlier and but they had already found another photographer, but I was notified this morning that the photographer had backed out. So tonight, I'm heading over to Cincinnati for a Red Bull Barmaster. DJ Clockwork and CJ Townsend, both amazing DJ's are going to be there hanging out and spinning. It's going to be sweet!

And later this week I'm going to be photographing a party that Red Bull has put together with Fly.Union! They are an emerging hip hop rap group in the Columbus area. I have been checking out their music and some of it's been catchy, but other have been very "real" Check out their stuff at http://www.flydotu.com I really like the song, "less is more" Good stuff. Anyways. I'll post some photographs later this week.

Red Bull City Swarm

This past weekend I headed over to Cincinnati for Red Bull City Swarm. It was held in downtown Cincinnati at Fountain Square. Red Bull City Swarm was the first of its kind in the red bull world! The concept behind it was bringing go cart racing in an urban environment. Really cool concept and event.

It was rather difficult to cover this event by myself. In addition, the track was large enough that I had to cover a lot of ground in order to get shots and I missed a lot because I was in a different area. Definitely a two person job.

Shooting with the 1d mark iv was so much better than the 5d mark ii. The frame rate and focus is amazing. I need to work on using those focus points because I find it like to center focus a lot. I primarily used the 24-70 2.8L and the 70-200 2.8L.

But it was still a fun day.

The bengals linebacker coach participated in the race too! Here he is looking all pensive and stuff. Look at the concentration on his face!

The videographer Chad in a helicopter doing some video work above! Real cool

The only crash I got in a photograph. As I said, it was hard to cover because of the huge track. Right as I left a place, not a minute later a crash would happen at the place I was at previously.

I had to work with different types of lights and it very interesting getting different looks out of the images.

As you can see there were crazy amounts of contrast in lighting everywhere. This was on top of the macy's building.

Elementz 4Square Dance Party

Last thursday, I traveled down to Cincinnati where I photographed a new concept dance competition. It's based off the game of foursquare. Anyways, I'm not going to go into the concept but I thought I would share some photographs with you. These were all taken with my new 1d mark iv =). This camera is fast...fast at everything! I know that I would not have been able to capture all those  images without it. My 5d mark ii would not have been able to focus as fast and as accurately in that dark room. All these are lit with speedlights so it was really really dark. The 1d mark iv just hit focus again and again. I'm so happy that I made the plunge and I purchased it. This is going to help me so much in the future with all the action photography that I will be doing in the coming year.

Red Bull Thre3style

I was a second shooter/assistant for this event. Red Bull brought in this awesome action sports photographer from California named Justin Kosman, check out his work here. Shout outs to him for teaching me so much! he should update his blog more =). Anyways, here are some of the shots from the event. Since I was second shooting. I focused more on the "behind the scenes" images, the "moments" and wide crowd shots.  In addition I held lights for Justin and ran cards for him. Running cards meaning I "ran" to the back and offloaded images onto his computer. It was a great learning experience for me because I got to see how Justin worked and how his workflow went. I also picked his brain about the business of photography and how to work with clients. I learned....SO SO much. So again thank you Justin! Here are some of my images from the event.
