MIA…sorry!

I am so sorry readers that I haven't blogged in a long time! Life has been busy and good. I will update you on some things that have been happening. I started shooting for the Lantern which is OSU's student run newspaper. Just my luck that Osama decided to die last Sunday. this enabled me to capture some of the celebration that was happening at OSU that night. AP (associated press), and american news agency (well known one),  saw one of my images from that night and wanted to use it in one of their stories! woah! So my photograph has been seen around the country. AWESOME!

I also was able to photograph a band that I haven't heard in a long time. Yellowcard! Shooting a live shows are really hard. Things are happening everywhere, lights are flashing everywhere messing with the camera meter, your exposure is mostly always off by a bit, it's just crazy! kids are moshing, surfing and falling on you. You are just shooting like crazy hoping that you'll get a good image. But it's a rush and it's so fun! this is my favorite image of the night. The lead singer of yellowcard, check out the pick-holder. haha =)

Yellowcard was not the headliner so I was also able to photograph All Time Low. Don't really know the punk scene, but they put on a good show! The lead guitarist was a character! So fun to photograph.

The Beginning

As part of my Alternative Camera class, I am required to journal about my experiments. So for this I really wanted to experiment with digital pinhole because I have heard good things about it. So here are some images of what I did to prepare myself for pinhole

I first bought a body cap

I then drilled a hole into the middle, so this is what it looks like on the camera.

I drilled a piece of brass.

I then measured the distance of the sensor to the hole of the body cap to figure out the optimal diameter hole.

After that I tape the pinhole to the body cap and went and shot. This is what I came up with.

As you can see, the images are not sharp but it has an interesting look to it.

I think this is probably my favorite images so far because there is some sharpness to it.

We also found at the with flash it sometimes get a little bit sharper. So I might want to experiment with some lighting with pinhole

Vienny + David: Married

Vienny and David were married twice in one day! They had a traditional Vietnamese ceremony in the morning and a traditional American one in the afternoon. Both were beautiful and full of happiness and emotion! The Vietnamese ceremony was held at Vienny's home where they honored their elders and parents. And the American ceremony was held just outside of Thompson Library on OSU campus right in front of the oval. Gordon Gee made a surprise visit! It was truly a wonderful wedding.

The vietnamese ceremony is very similar to the taiwanese one. They serve tea to their elders and get hong bao (red pouches)

Some casual portraits outside Viennys parent's house

Got to have the serious asian family portrait.

Beautiful and Executive.

I'd say I caught their true faces for each other. Quite cute.

You think she is whispering sweet nothings into his ear, but she is actually giving him a kiss on the cheek. =)

It was quite warm outside so we stuck inside Thompson library. This is in the grand reading room!

I always like trying new things and experimenting, so I asked them to dance downstairs while I ran upstairs to grab this shot. I really love this.

We then moved outside for some outdoor portraits

I love it when couples give me more time to take portraits, because then I can give them more! Vienny and David gave me 2 hours! That gave me plenty of time to get creative and try new and different things.

President Gordon Gee made a surprise visit!

Praying before the ceremony

Instead of having chairs prepared, the couple decided to ask the attendees to bring their own chairs which I thought was very cool and it made the ceremony semi-casual.

Instead of candles the couple decided to do a water ceremony because the candles would blow out in the wind.

You might ask how did I get two photographs of the kiss? Well that is a good question. I prefocused my wide photograph and then when the time came, I just held them both up and shot! ingenious I know. I'm awesome =) psh.

Vienny and David had their reception at Sunflower where they had a 10 course meal!

Vienny and David had their cake made by Sugardaddy's which has been featured on food network. It was delicious!

It was a brownie cake which was very hard to cut. Look at that determination!

First dance!

Hang on sloopy hang on!

Some line dancing!

Love these images of the tosses.

Last dance of the night before they head off!

Thank you Vienny and David for letting me be apart of your special day. I had so much fun making photographs throughout the day. You guys are awesome!

Ninja Final

I decided to continue the series of ninjas for my final project in lighting this quarter. I shot 5 situations in 3 days. Here they are! I had an awesome time shooting. Thanks to Josh for being an awesome ninja and thanks to all of my models. I'll go through the lighting info and my thought process  in all of them for those who want to know.

Originally I had envisioned the ninja behind a tree trunk lit but I couldn't find the right path/tree combo so i settled for this one. Ninja lit with a strobe zoomed to 105mm to act like a snoot and the runner was lit with an umbrella and a alienbee 1600 (thanks frank). I wish I had more power in my lights so I could have dialed it down and froze my runner more. If you look closely there is a bit of a blur in her. So for you people just learning how to light. The shorter the flash duration the more motion you can stop. When you bump lights to full power the duration of the flash is longer so there is blur.

This one was kind of fun to light because all of the lights were outside! For the ninja I had two strobes at full power outside zoomed in at 105 to shoot through the window so it casts a nice shadow against the wall. I also wanted to catch the glint of the sword to add dramatic feel. To light the victim I had a the alienbee outside with an umbrella at around...maybe quarter power so that the light would wash over my brother and into the room. I still wanted the dramatic shadows and darkness because ninjas are...of the night.

For this image, I had Janika look up to pray and  I had an umbrella high right to simulate the heavenly light casting down on her. For my ninja I wanted harder light so he would look dramatic. I had two lights one camera left and one camera right zoomed in to create a crossfire. This in turn made him look super dramatic! and it caught the glint of the sword. In hindsight I wish I had used two strip softboxes to light him so that all of his body would be lit.

For this image we were running out of time, so I feel like I would like to redo it. I don't like the angle and one of my flashes wasn't working. This was originally suppose to be a 3 light setup. 1 fill and 2 kickers. It ended up being just 1 fill and 1 kicker. Anyways, I had the alienbee bare tubed camera left, and then the kicker was on the ninja zoomed in at around 85mm? I would have placed the other kicker behind the victim to give separation in the background. I really need to get myself some legit lights...or another pocket wizards..or something!

This last one is really funny to me because all this time the photographer has "documented" this and finally while he is sleeping he gets it too! And don't you love pooh bear? <3  Ok This was lit with two lights. One softbox high and camera left to create a wash of soft light on me. And on the ninja, I had a flash zoomed in camera. I wish I had a boom so I could have put the softbox right over me instead of angled. And I wish I had flagged the flash so it wouldn't spray the light everywhere. But oh well.

Red Bull Chariot Race

Last thursday I photographed an event that red bull hosted on 15th and high. It was called Red Bull Chariot Race, and basically what happened was that 11 sororities and fraternities built their own chariots and raced them. I'm really a portrait/editorial photographer so I'm always challenged when photographing events for red bull because most, if not all, of their events are action intensive. I'm working on it...anyways, here are some of my favorite images from the day.

I'm a sucker for backllighting.

Love this image because everyone is glued to the race.

Bonging a Red Bull

Intensity and lens flair!

When I shoot, I'm always looking for emotion,  because it makes the image stand out.

I like this image because it shows the one chariot failing as the other two push for the finish line.

Backlighting in this image makes the winners look very dramatic and heavenly.

I chose to shoot this in portrait mode because I was really drawn to the long shadows the bodies are creating. That paired with the sun flair makes the image.

EMOTION!

Like I said, real sucker for beautiful backlight.
